Construction work has now begun on Doncaster’s new arts and entertainment venue that is scheduled to open in the Spring of 2013.
The state-of-the-art, £20 million venue will be much more than just a replacement for the 90 year old Civic Theatre. It will radically transform the art and entertainment offer in Doncaster and across the region.
The striking contemporary building will be the centrepiece of the first phase of the Civic and Cultural Quarter (CCQ) development scheme that will transform the south side of Doncaster town centre, through a partnership between Doncaster Council and Muse Developments.
The project has been developed by Doncaster Council, through its 3D Regeneration Team and its Arts Service, and with vital capital, programme and specialist support from Arts Council England.
Designed by RHWL architects’ Arts Team to a demanding brief, it will provide a dynamic and flexible range of spaces including:
* A high-quality 620-seat lyric theatre auditorium, with a large stage and fly-tower.
* A flat floor flexible second space to accommodate 200 seated or 400 standing.
* A dance studio for practice and performance.
* An intimate drama studio.
The new venue is located next to Doncaster Council’s new civic offices and will look out onto a landscaped public square. If you’d like to be kept up to date with progress please visit: www.doncaster.gov.uk/ccq
